Most seeds need to be kept warm at all times to germinate and produce a strong root system. The ideal temperature for germination depends on the plant, but in general, seeds require a constant temperature of 65 to 75 degrees.
An almost reliable way to achieve this idyllic constant temperature is to use seedling pads, electric heating pads located under the seedling trays, usually regulated by a thermostat. Using a mat will speed up germination, produce healthier seedlings and prevent damping.
The size of the seedling pad is usually suitable to accommodate one, two or four standard size nursery units. The mat may be equipped with a thermostat, or you can choose one individually for multiple mats. Either way, it is best to use some kind of temperature control to prevent plants from overheating.
