A cast-in plate is made by:

• Placing electric resistance heating elements (usually stainless-steel sheathed heaters) inside a mold
• Pouring molten aluminum around them
• Letting it solidify into a single, solid block

How It Generates Heat

The embedded heating elements work on electrical resistance heating:

1. Electricity flows through the internal resistance wire.
2. The wire resists the current.
3. Resistance generates heat (Joule heating).
4. Heat transfers into the aluminum body.
5. Aluminum spreads the heat evenly across the plate surface  ​

Why Aluminum Is Used

Aluminum is ideal because it:

• Heats up quickly
• Distributes heat uniformly
• Is lightweight compared to steel
• Minimizes hot spots (critical for foil transfer quality)

In a Hot Foil Embossing Press

In machines like those made by manufacturers such as KURZ or BOBST, the cast-in heating plate:

1. Mounts behind the brass or magnesium embossing die.
2. Heats the die uniformly.
3. The press applies pressure.
4. Heat + pressure activates adhesive layer on the foil.
5. Foil bonds to the substrate surface.

Compared to mica or strip heaters bolted onto plates:
