Watlow builds protection into every aspect of its silicone rubber heaters to combat these elements.
The heating element itself is a corrosion-resistant alloy foil, etched into a precise circuit pattern. This pattern is engineered to provide uniform heat distribution and is fully encapsulated, shielding it from all external threats.
This is the first line of defense. Watlow uses specialty-grade silicone rubber that is:
Every component-the foil element, lead wires, and terminals-is completely vulcanized and sealed within the silicone rubber. This creates a monolithic, waterproof barrier with no gaps for moisture or contaminants to enter. This process is critical for achieving high Ingress Protection (IP) ratings like IP66, IP67, or IP68, which certify the heater as dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets or prolonged immersion.
The point where the electrical leads exit the heater is a common failure point. Watlow reinforces these areas with extra silicone jacketing, strain relief, and often uses high-temperature, chemically resistant leads like FEP (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene) or silicone rubber to prevent cracking and breaking.
For the most extreme applications involving physical abrasion, impact, or high-pressure washdowns, Watlow can laminate the silicone heater between two layers of 304 or 316L stainless steel. This cladding provides a tremendously durable, easy-to-clean shell that protects the silicone element from direct damage while still efficiently transferring heat.
When a heating application moves from a controlled indoor setting to an unpredictable outdoor or harsh environment, the stakes are significantly higher. Failure is not an option. Watlow silicone rubber heaters are more than just a source of heat; they are a robust protective system. Through meticulous material selection, sealing technology, and optional armored cladding, they provide dependable thermal performance where it's needed most, ensuring continuity and safety in the face of the elements.
