Uniform heat distribution in hopper blanket design provides a consistently smooth flow of materials, helps to avoid moisture-related issues, enhances product quality, protects equipment, and reduces energy usage. Without it, you are inviting material blockages, excessive condensation, non-uniform processing, and premature wear and tear of the heating assembly and hopper.
1. Prevent Blockages and Material Bridging
With conical hoppers, powdered or pelleted materials or granules can associate or clump together (bridge) if the geometry of the hopper has section that are warmer and others that are cold.
Differential heating creates "cold spots" and, at those locations, cold air from the environment or sedimentation is where the condensation or solidification occurs. So, in those areas flow is restricted or stopped.
Uniform heating allows materials to flow uniformly down the cone of the hopper (no bridging means no blockages).
2. Avoid Condensation and Moisture Build-Up
If there is temperature differentials on the wall of the hopper, condensation will occur upon reaching the wall temperature of the dew point.
All unaccounted for moisture, moisture contamination, causes our materials to stick, spoil, or divide or be mixtures of contamination.
A blanket that can distribute heat, uniformly, does so across the entire surface which allows for prevention of condensation.
3. Improve Process Consistency
Most industries (plastics, food, chemicals and pharmaceuticals) require an even and stable temperature in a hopper. The operations within the hooper are influenced by the temperature of the wall surface.
Differential heat can be a source or cause of non-uniform melting, drying, or dosing, which can lead to a lower product quality.
4. Protect the Structure of the Hopper
Hot spots, where heat is distributed evenly from larger contact areas, will overstress and affect certain areas throughout the structure of the wall of the hopper.
Uniform heating will evenly distribute the thermal loading, which will mitigate the impact of metal fatigue or warping over time.
5. Energy Efficiency
Even heat distribution means the blanket doesn't need to "overcompensate" with higher wattage in colder areas.
That saves energy and reduces operating costs, while extending the heater's lifespan.
