PTC Thermistor Heater
PTC thermistor is a kind of thermistor whose resistance increases significantly with temperature.They’re usually made of polycrystalline ceramic materials, which have high resistance in their original state, and are made into semiconductors by adding dopants. They are mainly used as PTC self-regulating heaters. The transition temperature of most switching PTC thermistors is between 60°C and 120°C. However, special application equipment manufactured can be switched at temperatures as low as 0°C or as high as 200°C.
Typical application of PTC thermistor
(1) Automatically adjust the heater
If there is current through the switch PTC thermistor, it will automatically stabilize at a certain temperature. This means that if the temperature decreases, the resistance also decreases, allowing more current to flow, thereby heating the device.
(2) Overcurrent protection
The switch PTC thermistor is used as an overcurrent limiter or resettable fuse in various circuits. In the case of overcurrent, the thermistor body temperature rises and quickly reaches the transition temperature.
(3) Time delay
A PTC thermistor can be used to heat enough for the time required to switch from its low resistance state to a high resistance state to provide a time delay in the circuit, and vice versa.
(4) Motor start
Some motors have a separate start winding, which only requires power supply during the start of the motor. In this case, we can use the self-heating effect of the PTC thermistor connected in series with this winding.
