In a sun heater, the goal is simple: get as much infrared heat as possible from the heating tube to the person or object in front of it. But infrared radiation doesn't naturally go where you want it to-it spreads in all directions. Without some way to direct it, a lot of that energy is wasted heating the back of the heater housing or the ceiling above.
That's where gold reflectors come in. A gold coating applied directly to the quartz tube reflects infrared radiation and directs it toward the target . It's a small feature that makes a big difference in performance.
Inside an infrared heating tube, the heating element generates radiation that travels outward in all directions. A gold reflector-typically a thin layer of gold applied to one side of the quartz tube-acts as a mirror for infrared wavelengths .
This coating redirects the radiation that would otherwise escape through the back of the tube, focusing it into a directional beam. The result is more heat reaching the intended area and less wasted energy .
The reflector is applied directly to the quartz surface during manufacturing. It's not an external add-on, so it doesn't require maintenance or adjustment .
The efficiency boost from a gold reflector is substantial:
Reflectivity: Gold reflects more than 90% of infrared radiation . Some sources report reflectivity exceeding 99% in twin-tube configurations .
Energy concentration: A gold coating on infrared lamps can virtually double the radiation impinging on the target object compared to uncoated tubes .
Comparison to white reflectors: White ceramic reflectors, by contrast, reflect only about 70% of IR radiation .
In practical terms: a gold-reflector tube delivers nearly all the IR energy generated to the heating zone, while an uncoated or white-reflector tube loses a significant portion to the back and sides.
Gold is preferred as a reflector material for several reasons :
High spectral reflectance: Gold reflects infrared wavelengths extremely effectively
No oxidation: Unlike aluminum or silver, gold does not tarnish or oxidize over time. The reflective surface stays bright for the life of the heater
Permanent finish: Because the coating is applied to the inside surface of the quartz tube, it's protected from dust, moisture, and cleaning agents
Gold reflectors have one trade-off: temperature. The gold layer is typically rated for operating temperatures up to about 600°C with proper cooling . For higher-temperature applications (up to 900-1000°C), white ceramic reflectors are used instead-but with lower reflectivity .
For sun heater applications, which typically operate well below 600°C, this is rarely a concern.
If you're manufacturing sun heaters, specifying gold-reflector heating tubes gives you:
Higher effective output from the same wattage-more usable heat per watt
Better directional control-heat goes where it's needed, not into the housing
Lower energy cost for the same heating performance
Competitive advantage-a sun heater with a gold reflector simply feels more powerful than one without
We've seen OEMs switch from uncoated to gold-reflector tubes and report a noticeable difference in perceived warmth at the same power rating. That's the efficiency gain showing up in real-world performance.
