As AGV and AMR forklifts become more widely used in automated warehouses, logistics centers, and smart factories, maintaining stable operation under different ambient conditions has become increasingly important.
For battery-powered forklifts, low temperatures can affect battery performance. In cold warehouses, refrigerated areas, or low-temperature workshops, the battery may experience reduced output capacity, slower charging, and shorter operating time.
For these applications, a flexible heating solution can be used to warm the battery and help maintain a suitable operating temperature.
Lithium batteries are sensitive to ambient temperature. At low temperatures, the electrochemical reactions inside the battery slow down, which can affect both charging and discharging performance.
For an AGV or AMR forklift, this may result in:
Battery warming can therefore be useful when the forklift operates or starts up in a cold environment.
A PI film heater, also known as a polyimide film heater, is a thin and flexible heating element typically made with a polyimide insulation layer and a patterned heating circuit.
Its thin profile and flexibility make it particularly suitable for applications where installation space is limited.
For battery heating, a PI film heater can be attached directly to the surface of the battery housing or to a designated heating area, allowing heat to be transferred to the battery through conduction.
In a typical AGV battery heating application, the PI film heater is installed on the outer surface of the battery pack or battery housing.
The exact position depends on the battery structure and available installation space. The heater may be installed on the bottom, side, or another suitable surface where heat can be effectively transferred to the battery.
For larger battery packs, multiple heating zones can also be used to provide more even heat distribution.
The heater design should be determined based on the battery dimensions, ambient temperature, required temperature, available power, insulation, and temperature control method.
Temperature Control Is Important
The PI film heater provides the heat, while a temperature sensor and control system can be used to manage the heating process.
For example, an NTC, thermocouple, or other temperature sensor can monitor the battery temperature. The controller can then switch the heater on or off according to the preset temperature range.
A typical control process is simple: the heater starts when the battery temperature falls below the set point and stops or reduces heating once the desired temperature is reached.
This helps maintain the battery within the required temperature range while avoiding unnecessary energy consumption.
When selecting or customizing a PI film heater for an AGV or AMR battery, the following information is normally required:
With the battery structure and installation location confirmed, the heater size, power, and construction can then be evaluated accordingly.
For AGV and AMR forklifts operating in cold warehouses, refrigerated environments, or other low-temperature conditions, battery temperature management can be an important part of maintaining stable operation.
PI film heaters offer a practical solution because they are thin, lightweight, flexible, and easy to customize. Installed on the battery housing, they can provide controlled heating to help bring the battery up to a suitable operating temperature.
For battery heating applications, the goal is not simply to increase the temperature. Proper selection of heater power, heating area, temperature control, and installation position is essential to achieve effective and reliable battery warming.
