How to test and inspect coil heating elements?

1. Turn off the power supply: Before performing any testing or inspection, turn off the power supply to the heating element. This ensures your safety and prevents any damage to the element or the testing equipment.

2. Visual inspection: Check for any signs of damage such as cracks, breaks or burn marks on the heating element. Ensure that the connections are secure and free from corrosion.

3. Continuity Testing: Using a multimeter, set it to the resistance measurement or continuity setting. Test the continuity of the heating element by placing the probes on the wires at either end of the coil. If the resistance reading is infinite or above the expected range, then the heating element needs to be replaced.

4. Voltage Testing: Using a voltmeter, set it to the voltage measuring range. Turn on the power supply to the heating element and touch the probes of the voltmeter to the wires connected at either end of the heating element. If the voltage reading is within the expected range, then the heating element is functioning properly.

5. Wattage Calculation: Using the voltage reading and the resistance reading, calculate the wattage output of the heating element. This can be done by using the formula, P=V^2/R. If the wattage output is within the expected range, then the heating element is functioning properly.

If any of these tests indicate a problem, then the heating element needs to be replaced or repaired. It is best to consult a licensed electrician or HVAC technician for proper inspection, testing, and replacement of the coil heating element.
