Overcurrent Protection

PTC heaters have a unique property in that their electrical resistance increases as their temperature rises. This means that as the current passing through the PTC element increases, it generates more heat, causing the resistance to rise even further. This positive feedback loop is what gives PTC heaters their overcurrent protection.

When there is an overcurrent situation, such as a short circuit or an increase in electrical current beyond the designed limit, the PTC heating element heats up rapidly. As it heats up, its resistance increases dramatically, which in turn reduces the amount of current flowing through the element. This self-regulating behavior effectively limits the current and prevents it from reaching dangerous levels, reducing the risk of overheating or damage to the heater.

 

Overtemperature Protection

PTC heaters also offer built-in overtemperature protection. As the temperature of the PTC element rises due to extended operation or other factors, its resistance increases, which, in turn, reduces the amount of power it consumes. This decrease in power leads to a natural limit on the maximum temperature the PTC element can reach.

If the temperature continues to rise beyond the designed safe limit, the PTC heater will self-regulate and effectively limit its own temperature. This prevents the PTC element from becoming dangerously hot and reduces the risk of overheating and potential damage to the heater or surrounding components.
