A (PTC) (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heating element operates differently than resistance wire heaters. Rather than a constant draw of the same amount of current, a PTC heater self-regulates its temperature, making it safer and more energy-efficient.
Working Principles
1-Electricity travels through the ceramic material of the PTC (which is typically doped barium titanate).
2-In an unheated state, the material has low resistance, and thus a fast heating rate and quick startup.
3-As the element heats at a rapid speed, its electrical resistance increases sharply at a set temperature point.
4-The rising resistance will naturally, also restrict current flow, and thus restrict more heating.
5-The result is an automatic constant temperature self-regulation system, without the need of an external thermostat.
In a Hot Glue Gun
1-When the glue gun is switched on, the PTC quickly heats to its designed operating temperature (typically some where in the range of 160–200 °C).
2-Once it hits this range it will maintain that temperature.
3-If the glue gun is resting or air flow escapes, then the PTC heater would automatically scale back power, preventing overheating or burnout.
Benefits of Glue Guns
Speedy heat-up: Heats glue sticks rapidly so you don't have to wait to work.
Energy saving: Only needs to use the power necessary to sustain the correct temperature.
Safe & reliable: The built-in self-regulation minimizes fire risk and increases heater life.
Long life: No delicate resistance coils to burn out, therefore PTC ceramics last significantly longer.
In short, a PTC heating element in a hot glue gun provides quick heating, stable temperature control, and enhanced safety, making it an ideal choice compared to traditional heating wires.
