How to use Cartridge Heater with Thermocouple in Rubber Vulcanization

Feb 10, 2025

1. Selection of the Right Cartridge Heater

Before installation, choose a cartridge heater with the correct:
Diameter & Length – Ensure a proper fit in the mold or heating block.
Power & Voltage – Match the machine's power requirements (e.g., 110V, 220V, 380V).
Thermocouple Type – Use J-type (up to 750°C) or K-type (up to 1200°C) for accurate temperature control.
Watt Density – Select 5-30 W/cm² depending on heating needs.

2. Installation Process

🔹 Step 1: Prepare the Mounting Hole

Ensure the drilled hole matches the heater's diameter for maximum heat transfer.

Hole tolerance should be +0.02mm to +0.05mm for a snug fit.

Clean the hole to remove dust, oil, or residue.

🔹 Step 2: Insert the Cartridge Heater

Gently insert the heater into the hole, ensuring it fits tightly to avoid heat loss.

Use heat-conductive paste if needed to improve thermal efficiency.

🔹 Step 3: Secure the Leads & Connections

Position lead wires away from high-temperature zones to prevent damage.

Use ceramic terminal blocks or high-temperature connectors for wiring.

Connect the thermocouple wires to the temperature controller.

🔹 Step 4: Set Up the Temperature Controller

Connect the heater and thermocouple to a PID controller or temperature control panel.

Set the required temperature (e.g., 180°C - 220°C for standard rubber vulcanization).

Configure the controller to adjust heat based on thermocouple feedback.

🔹 Step 5: Test & Monitor Heating Performance

Slowly increase the temperature and monitor heat distribution.

Ensure the thermocouple provides accurate temperature readings.

Check for hot spots or uneven heating in the mold or press.

3. Maintenance and Safety Tips

Regularly inspect the heater and thermocouple for wear, oxidation, or damage.
Keep the mounting hole clean to ensure efficient heat transfer.
Monitor lead wires for signs of fraying or overheating.
Use proper grounding to prevent electrical hazards.
Avoid frequent power cycling to extend heater lifespan.

4. Applications in Rubber Vulcanization

Rubber Injection & Compression Molds – Ensures uniform curing.
Press Plate Heating – Provides consistent heat for vulcanization presses.
Extruder Die Heating – Maintains precise temperature for rubber flow.
Hot Runner Systems – Prevents rubber solidification in injection molds.

By following these steps, a cartridge heater with a thermocouple will ensure efficient, precise, and reliable heating in the rubber vulcanization process.
