How to Use Thermal Cut-Off (TCO) Fuses in Microwaves & Toasters

Jun 06, 2025

1. Safety Precautions

Before working:

Unplug the appliance (microwave/toaster)

For microwaves: Discharge the high-voltage capacitor (use an insulated screwdriver with a resistor)

Wear insulated gloves if handling wiring

2. How to Install/Replace a TCO Fuse

For Microwaves:

Step 1: Locate the Fuse

Common positions:

Near the magnetron (main heating component)

Close to the power transformer

Behind the control panel

Refer to your microwave's service manual for exact location

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuse

Use needle-nose pliers to disconnect spade terminals

If soldered, desolder carefully

Step 3: Test the Fuse (If Unsure)

Set a multimeter to continuity mode

If no beep, the fuse is blown

Step 4: Install the New Fuse

Match voltage, current, and temperature ratings

Secure connections (no loose wires)

Step 5: Test the Microwave

Plug in and run a short test (e.g., 30 sec at low power)

If it trips again, check for blocked vents, faulty fan, or bad thermostat

Application of Thermal Fuse

For Toasters:

Step 1: Access the Fuse

Remove the crumb tray and unscrew the outer casing

The fuse is usually near the heating elements

Step 2: Check for Damage

Look for burnt marks or melted housing

Test with a multimeter (should have continuity)

Step 3: Replace the Fuse

Use the same temperature/current rating

Ensure wires are properly crimped or soldered

Step 4: Reassemble & Test

Plug in and toast a slice of bread

If it fails again, inspect for stuck bread, faulty thermostat, or wiring issues

3. Troubleshooting Common Issues

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Fuse blows immediately Short circuit / Overheating Check wiring & ventilation
Microwave/Toaster not heating Dead fuse Replace & diagnose root cause
Fuse gets too hot but doesn't trip Wrong rating Use correct temp/current fuse

4. Key Tips for Proper Use

Never bypass a TCO fuse – it's a critical safety device
Use OEM or exact-spec replacements (e.g., WB27X1127 for GE microwaves)
Fix the underlying issue (e.g., clean toaster crumbs, check microwave fan)
