Do you know the difference between type S and type R thermocouples?

Dec 29, 2023

Both type S and type R thermocouples are commonly used in high-temperature applications. The main difference between the two is their composition. Type S thermocouples are made of platinum (94%) and rhodium (6%) and are able to measure temperatures up to 1,768°C. Type R thermocouples are made of platinum (87%) and rhodium (13%) and can measure temperatures up to 1,482°C.

Type S thermocouples are more commonly used in industries such as aerospace, power generation, and semiconductor manufacturing, where high-temperature measurements are necessary. Type R thermocouples are often used in the heat-treating and forging industries, as well as in laboratory and testing applications.

Both types of thermocouples have high accuracy and stability, making them reliable for precise temperature measurement. It is important to note that when choosing between these two thermocouples, one should consider the specific needs of their application and select the appropriate type accordingly.
