Ceramic band heaters are widely used to heat the screw barrel of injection molding machines. They provide efficient, uniform, and controllable heating for plastic processing applications such as injection molding, extrusion, and other thermoplastic processing systems.
A ceramic band heater is designed to fit tightly around the outside surface of the injection molding machine barrel. When electrical power is supplied, resistance heating elements inside the heater convert electrical energy into heat. The heat is transferred through the ceramic insulation and metal sheath into the barrel, helping maintain the plastic at the required processing temperature.

The working principle can be divided into five basic steps:
When voltage is applied to the ceramic band heater, electrical current passes through its resistance heating element. According to the principle of electrical resistance heating, the element generates heat.
The generated heat is distributed through the ceramic insulating material and transferred toward the barrel surface.
The ceramic band heater wraps around the outside of the injection molding machine screw barrel. Good contact between the heater and barrel allows heat to conduct efficiently into the metal barrel.
As the barrel temperature increases, the heat gradually reaches the plastic material inside the barrel.
Inside the barrel, plastic pellets are transported forward by the rotating screw. The combination of barrel heating and mechanical shear from the screw helps melt the plastic.
Different sections of the barrel can be equipped with individual ceramic band heaters so that each heating zone can operate at a specific temperature.
Injection molding machines normally divide the barrel into several temperature zones. Each zone can have its own ceramic band heater and temperature sensor, such as a thermocouple.
The temperature controller switches or regulates electrical power according to the measured barrel temperature. This helps maintain stable processing temperatures and prevents excessive overheating.
Once the barrel reaches the target temperature, the ceramic band heater provides controlled heat to compensate for heat losses.
Stable barrel temperature helps ensure consistent plastic melting, flow behavior, injection pressure, and molded-part quality.

Ceramic band heaters offer several advantages for screw-barrel heating:

Ceramic band heaters are commonly used on screw barrels for:

For an injection molding machine, the heater should be selected according to the actual barrel and machine requirements. Important parameters include:
| Parameter | Typical Consideration |
|---|---|
| Heater Type | Ceramic Band Heater |
| Application | Injection molding screw barrel |
| Heater Diameter | Matched to barrel diameter |
| Heater Width | According to heating-zone length |
| Voltage | Customized |
| Wattage | Customized |
| Operating Temperature | Customized |
| Insulation | Ceramic insulation |
| Heating Control | Thermocouple + temperature controller |

Ceramic band heaters work by converting electrical energy into heat and transferring that heat through ceramic insulation into the outside surface of an injection molding machine screw barrel. The heated barrel then works together with the rotating screw to melt and process plastic materials.
