Turtles may benefit from the use of a heating pad or heating mat, but only in very specific circumstances, such as when the animal is sick. The problem with regular use of heat pads is that they do not promote basking behavior, which is critical to the healthy development of the tortoise.
It is important to recognize that the tortoise is a reptile and therefore a "cold-blooded animal". This means that the turtle does not have a thermoregulatory system. In short, it cannot control its own temperature (just like we mammals do). It is subject to the weather it is exposed to.
Because of this, turtles can be greatly affected by extreme weather. For example, it is highly likely that a turtle will freeze to death. When a worried turtle owner believes that the temperature is so low that it could be dangerous for their turtle, they may want to help her pet.
Heat pads are best used in very specific situations. When a sick tortoise needs a source of heat overnight. This is mostly true when a turtle has been diagnosed with a respiratory problem and/or has been prescribed antibiotics (the temperature of the turtle's body needs to be kept constant to promote effective antibiotic action).
We only recommend using a heating pad if you have a sick turtle, as it will benefit from a higher body temperature at night. They do not advocate daytime basking, which is an important part of keeping your tortoise healthy.
As reptiles, your tortoise may need extra heat, especially if they are kept indoors, and it is important to make sure your tortoise has the right heat source to live safely and healthily!
